How to Move a Grandfather Clock

Moving heavy objects is not just a feat of strength, but also of the mind. Certain items can be lifted and carried with little thought, such as tables or sofas, but other more fragile items take careful planning. This article covers how to move a grandfather clock, which are often considered heirlooms and must be handled with care. You will learn what supplies you need and the proper steps to take to ensure the grandfather clock is moved without damage.

Tools needed:

  • Screwdriver - available at Walmart for $1.00
  • Level - available on eBay for $14.99
  • 4 moving blankets measuring 72” x 80” - available at Harbor Freight for between $5.99 and $8.99 each
  • Plastic wrap - available in large rolls from eBay for around $8.95 each if you buy 8 of them, or try Uhual for $16.95
  • Large rubber bands - available on eBay for $1.00 each or try http://www.uscargocontrol.com

Procedure:

  • Remove any ringing bells, pendulum, charms, or noisemakers from the clock and set aside.
  • Wrap the entire body of the grandfather clock, including the top, bottom, and sides, with the moving blankets. Use plastic wrap to secure the blankets to the clock body.
  • Wrap the bells or other noise making components in a blanket, using plastic wrap or a large rubber band to secure it.
  • Place the wrapped grandfather clock inside of the moving truck, making sure the glass panels on the clock are facing the truck wall.
  • If a mattress is being moved, this can be placed next to the glass face to prevent damage.
  • Place the wrapped bells or noise makers in a large box or secure in the attic of the moving truck.
  • Unload the grandfather clock at its new destination, placing it carefully in its new spot.

Tips After Arrival

  • Once the clock has been brought to its final place, it should be carefully uncovered.
  • Ensure the clock will work by leveling it precisely before returning the bells and pendulum.
  • To protect the grandfather clock, consider wearing clean gloves before touching.
  • Install the bells, pendulum or other noise makers carefully and re-set the clock to ensure accuracy.
  • Discuss re-setting the clock with a professional if needed.

Moving your grandfather clock should not be taken lightly - no pun intended. Make sure you are physically able to lift something as heavy as a grandfather clock, and enlist the help of a friend if needed. Professional movers are also available who will execute the transfer of your clock and other items safely and securely. Movers arrive with the tools necessary to complete the job efficiently and will let you rest easy while your heirlooms are moved from one place to another.

If you will be moving the grandfather clock yourself, remember to pick up the suggested tools and materials. Leaving one thing out could cause problems, including breaking the clock or injuring yourself. Remember to remove the bells, pendulum, any noise makers, or other dangling features to as not to damage them - cover in blankets and place in a separate box or area of the moving truck. Place something soft, such as a mattress, next to the clock for extra protection. Carefully move the item and level it before replacing the bells and pendulum and re-setting the clock.
